Cognitive Impairment

Many patients suffer from cognitive-communication disorders, or an acquired or progressively worsening impairment of our cognition. This includes memory, recalling information, processing, sustaining/dividing/alternating attention, planning, and self-control or self-awareness. Cognition also encompasses a term called “executive functioning” which may include some of the cognitive processes above, but may also refer to things like planning schedules, managing medication, overseeing and managing finances, understanding time concepts, etc.

If your cognitive impairment resulted from a stroke, a traumatic brain injury, or a neurologic disease, a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) may be able to help. Specialists in many areas of neurologic functioning, these experts are specially trained in helping people rehabilitate and regain areas where cognitive deficits may be present. Through rigorous and functional therapy, clients will be asked to work on a multitude of cognitive tasks that spark new neurocognitive pathways for improved function.

Additionally, SLPs are well-versed in assisting caregivers as they support their loved ones with new or progressively worsening cognitive functioning. Strategies to improve patient outcomes, increase independent function, and improve overall relationship harmony are often targeting in caregiver coaching.
